How to Draw a Giraffe Step by Step
Follow these giraffe drawing step by step instructions. Go slowly, and remember your giraffe does not need to be perfect. Real giraffes have wonderfully uneven patches and wobbly long legs, and that is part of what makes them so charming. Every line you draw helps your hand get steadier and more confident.
Step 1: Draw the Head
Start by drawing a small round circle near the upper middle of your paper. This is the giraffe’s head, so leave plenty of space below it for the long neck and big body. Draw it lightly so it is easy to fix later.
Step 2: Add the Snout
On one side of the circle, extend the shape slightly into a soft rounded snout. A giraffe’s face is long and gentle, so make the snout smooth and curved. Think of it like adding a small oval bump to the side of the head circle.
Step 3: Draw the Ossicone Horns
On top of the head, draw two short stubby bumps. These are called ossicones, the little knob-like horns that are unique to giraffes. Unlike the horns of cows or goats, ossicones are covered in skin and fur, and giraffes are born with them already on their heads.
Step 4: Draw the Right Ear
On the right side of the head, draw a small pointed leaf-shaped ear. Giraffe ears are medium-sized and stick out gently to the sides. Add a small inner curve inside the ear to show its depth.
Step 5: Draw the Left Ear
On the left side of the head, draw a matching ear. Try to make both ears about the same size and shape so your giraffe looks balanced. Now your giraffe’s head is starting to look just right!
Step 6: Draw the Eyes
On the face, draw a large round eye with a small circle inside for the pupil. Giraffes have some of the largest eyes of any land animal, so make it nice and big. Add a tiny white dot inside the pupil to make the eye look shiny and alive. You can also add a small curved line below the eye for the gentle smile.
Step 7: Draw the Long Neck
Below the head, draw two long curved lines going down for the neck. A giraffe’s neck is the longest of any animal on Earth, so make it nice and tall. The neck should be a little wider at the bottom where it meets the body. This long neck is what makes a giraffe instantly recognizable!
Step 8: Draw the Body
At the bottom of the neck, draw a large rounded oval shape for the body. The body should be much wider than the neck, like a big egg shape turned on its side. Leave the bottom of the body open for now because that is where we will attach the legs.
Step 9: Draw the Front Legs
Below the front of the body, draw two long straight legs with small rounded hooves at the bottom. Giraffe legs are tall and slender, so keep the lines close together and the hooves small and neat. These front legs need to be strong enough to hold up the whole giraffe!
Step 10: Draw the Back Legs
At the back of the body, draw two more matching legs. Try to keep all four legs about the same length so your giraffe can stand up tall and straight. The back legs sit slightly behind the front legs, which gives the giraffe a natural standing pose.
Step 11: Draw the Tail
At the back of the body, draw a thin curved tail that hangs down with a small tuft of hair at the very tip. Giraffes use their tails to swat away flies on the hot African savanna. Keep the tail thin and light so it does not overpower the drawing.
Step 12: Draw the Feet
Go back to all four legs and neaten up the hooves and feet. Add a small line near the bottom of each leg to separate the hoof from the leg. Giraffe hooves are rounded and tough, which helps them walk steadily across rocky and grassy savanna ground.
Step 13: Draw the Mane
Along the back of the neck, draw a row of short spiky lines for the mane. A real giraffe’s mane is short and bristly, running from the back of the head all the way down to the shoulders. These small spiky lines add a lot of character and make your giraffe look more lifelike.
Step 14: Add the Spots
Now for the most fun part of the drawing! All over the neck and body, draw large irregular rounded patches. These are the giraffe’s famous spots, and every single giraffe in the world has a completely different pattern, just like a human fingerprint. So there is truly no wrong way to draw them. Make them big and uneven for the most realistic look.
Step 15: Trace Your Final Lines

Step 16: Color Your Giraffe
Now for the best part: coloring! Giraffes have a golden orange or yellow body with rich dark brown patches. Color the spots dark brown or chestnut, leave the belly area a little lighter, and use a warm peach or tan for the face. Add a tiny pink dot on the nose and a warm brown for the hooves.
