How to Draw a Cactus Step by Step
A prickly pear cactus is made of flat, rounded stems called pads. New pads grow from the edges of older ones, which gives the plant its fun, bumpy shape. Sketch lightly at first, take it one pad at a time, and remember you can always erase and try again.
Step 1: Draw the Main Pad
Near the bottom middle of your paper, draw a tall rounded shape, like an upside-down egg. Let the sides curve gently outward at the bottom, and leave the bottom open. Rocks will cover that part later. Leave plenty of space above and on both sides for the other pads.
Step 2: Add the Big Left Pad
Draw a large oval tilted to the left, coming out from behind the top-left of the main pad. Only draw the part you can see, and stop your line where it touches the main pad. This simple trick makes the new pad look like it sits behind the first one.
Step 3: Add the Right Pad
On the right shoulder of the main pad, draw a smaller rounded pad leaning to the right. Again, stop the lines where they meet the main pad so the shapes do not cross.
Step 4: Grow a Small Pad on Top
On top of the right pad, draw a small, tall oval standing almost straight up. This is how real prickly pears grow, with each new pad sprouting from the edge of the one below it.
Step 5: Add a Tiny Tilted Pad
At the far right edge of the right pad, draw a little oval tipped sideways. Using different sizes and angles makes your cactus look alive instead of stiff.
Step 6: Draw a Flower on the Big Pad
On the top edge of the big left pad, draw a cluster of small rounded petals, like a little crown. Prickly pear flowers grow right on the edges of the pads, usually in spring.
Step 7: Add a Flower to the Small Top Pad
Draw the same petal cluster on top of the small upright pad, just a little smaller than the first one.
Step 8: Add a Flower to the Tiny Pad
Add one more flower to the tip of the tiny tilted pad. Keep it the smallest of the three. Flowers that shrink along with their pads make the drawing look balanced.
Step 9: Add the Spines
Now for the prickly part. Inside each pad, draw tiny groups of two or three short lines. Then add short single spikes sticking out along the outlines. On a real prickly pear, spines grow from small bumps called areoles that are spread all over the pad, so scatter your groups instead of lining them up in rows.
Step 10: Add Rocks at the Base
Along the bottom of the main pad, draw a row of round, bumpy rocks in different sizes. Let them overlap the bottom of the cactus so they hide the open edge from Step 1.
Step 11: Draw a Saguaro in the Background
On the left side, draw a small, tall cactus with two arms that bend upward, and add two lines inside each part for its ribs. Then draw a gently sloping ground line under it. Drawing it small makes it look far away.
Step 12: Add Hills and Ground Lines
On the right, draw a soft wavy line for a hill in the distance. Then add a few short horizontal lines and tiny dashes on the ground to show sand and pebbles.
Step 13: Add Desert Grass
On both sides of the rocks, draw small tufts of grass. Each tuft is a few pointy, curved blades grouped together like a little fan.
Step 14: Outline and Finish Your Cactus
Go over your best lines with a black marker. Let the ink dry for a moment, then erase all the leftover pencil marks. Your cactus line drawing is finished and ready for color!
How to Color Your Cactus Drawing
Color all the pads with a light yellow-green first. Then add a darker green along the edges and the bottom of each pad, and leave a lighter area in the middle. This simple shading makes the pads look round instead of flat.
Prickly pear flowers come in yellow, orange, pink, and red, so pick your favorite. Leave the spines white or light tan. Color the rocks gray, the ground light tan, and the saguaro a duller green so it looks far away. For the sky, try light blue for daytime or orange and pink for a desert sunset.
Common Cactus Drawing Mistakes (and Easy Fixes)
| Mistake | Easy fix |
|---|---|
| All the pads are the same size | Mix one big pad, two medium pads, and one tiny pad |
| Lines cross through each other | Stop each new line where it touches the pad in front |
| Spines are lined up in neat rows | Scatter them in small groups of two or three |
| Flowers are bigger than the pads | Keep each flower smaller than the tip of its pad |
| Dark lines that are hard to erase | Sketch lightly and use the marker only at the end |
Want a Cute Cartoon Cactus or Potted Cactus Instead?
Not every cactus has to look real. For a cute cartoon cactus, draw two dot eyes, a big smile, and rosy cheeks on the main pad, and turn one flower into a tiny hat. Kids love this version for cards, stickers, and notebook doodles.
For a potted cactus, skip the rocks and desert. Draw a wide trapezoid pot under the main pad and add a band across the top for the rim. Want a classic desert look? Draw the saguaro from Step 11 big instead of small, and make it the star of the picture.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you draw a cactus step by step? Start with a tall rounded pad, add more oval pads on the sides and top, put small flowers on the pad tips, and scatter tiny spines over every pad. Finish with rocks, a background scene, a black outline, and color.
What is the easiest cactus to draw? A potted cactus with one tall pad and one arm is the easiest. A prickly pear is also beginner-friendly because every pad is just an oval.
How do you draw cactus spines? Draw tiny groups of two or three short lines inside each pad, and short single spikes along the outline. Scatter them instead of putting them in rows.
What color is a cactus? Most cacti are green, from yellow-green to blue-green. Their flowers can be yellow, orange, pink, red, or white.
Do cactus plants have flowers? Yes. Many cacti bloom, usually in spring or summer. Prickly pear flowers grow on the edges of the pads and later turn into colorful fruit.
How do you make a cactus drawing look 3D? Shade the edges and bottom of each pad with a darker green and keep the middle lighter. Overlapping the pads also adds depth.
How long does it take to draw a cactus? A simple cactus takes about 5 minutes. This full prickly pear desert scene takes about 25 minutes, plus coloring.
