How to Draw a Palm Tree Step by Step
Most tutorials start with the trunk. We start with the leaves, because the crown is the hardest part to get right. Once the leaves are balanced, the trunk is easy to fit underneath.
Step 1: Draw the first palm leaf. Near the top center of your paper, draw one long leaf that curves down and to the left. Give the bottom edge a zigzag shape, like a feather. Make the tip narrow and pointed.
Step 2: Add the center vein. Draw a curved line down the middle of the leaf, from the top to the tip. This line is called the midrib. It makes the leaf look like a real palm frond.
Step 3: Draw the coconuts. At the top of the leaf, draw three or four small circles that overlap each other. This bunch of coconuts marks the center of your palm tree. Every other leaf will grow from this point.
Step 4: Draw a leaf reaching left. From the coconuts, draw a long leaf that stretches out to the left. Keep the same zigzag edge you used in Step 1.
Step 5: Draw a leaf pointing up. Add a leaf that grows upward from the top of the coconuts and bends slightly to the right at the tip.
Step 6: Add a leaf to the upper right. Draw a leaf that sweeps up and out to the right. Your tree should now have leaves on the left, top and right.
Step 7: Draw a long leaf to the right. Below the last leaf, draw a long leaf reaching to the right. Let the tip dip down a little.
Step 8: Add a drooping leaf on the right. Draw a leaf that hangs downward on the right side. Real palm leaves droop under their own weight, so curved, hanging leaves make your tree look natural.
Step 9: Draw a small hanging leaf. Right under the coconuts, add a short leaf that hangs straight down. This fills the gap in the middle of the crown.
Step 10: Finish the crown on the left. Draw one more drooping leaf on the lower left. Now your palm crown is full and balanced on both sides.
Step 11: Add veins to the left leaves. Draw a curved center line inside each leaf on the left side, just like you did in Step 2.
Step 12: Add veins to the right leaves. Do the same for the leaves on the right. Follow the curve of each leaf so the veins look smooth.
Step 13: Draw the left side of the trunk. From just below the coconuts, draw a long, gently curved line down toward the bottom of the page. Palm trunks are rarely straight, so a slight bend looks more natural.
Step 14: Draw the right side of the trunk. Draw a second curved line next to the first one. Keep the trunk thin at the top and a little wider at the bottom.
Step 15: Draw the grass. On both sides of the trunk base, draw a few tall, pointed blades of grass. Make some taller than others.
Step 16: Draw the ground. Draw a wide, curved line under the tree to make a small hill or sandy island.
Step 17: Add rings to the trunk. Draw short, curved lines across the trunk from top to bottom. Curve them slightly downward so the trunk looks round, not flat.
Step 18: Finish your drawing. Erase any extra pencil lines. If you like, trace over the final lines with a black marker. Your palm tree drawing is done!
How to Color Your Palm Tree Drawing
- Leaves: color them with a medium green. Add a darker green along the center vein and the bottom edge of each leaf for depth.
- Coconuts: use dark brown. Leave a small white spot on each coconut to make it look shiny.
- Trunk: color it light brown or tan. Go over the rings with a darker brown.
- Grass: use a bright yellow-green so it stands out from the leaves.
- Ground: sandy yellow for a beach, or green for a grassy hill.
- Background (optional): a blue sky, a yellow sun, or an orange sunset with a sea line behind the hill.
Shading tip: Light usually comes from above, so make the lower leaves and the right side of the trunk slightly darker. It instantly makes your drawing look 3D.

5 Common Mistakes (and How to Fix Them)
- All the leaves point straight out. Real palm leaves droop. Bend most leaves downward at the tip, especially the lower ones.
- The crown looks lopsided. Start from the coconuts and add leaves around them like the hands of a clock: left, top, right, then the drooping ones. That’s why this tutorial starts with the leaves.
- The trunk is a straight, thick tube. Give it a gentle curve and make it thinner at the top than at the bottom.
- The trunk rings are flat lines. Curve each ring slightly downward. Flat lines make the trunk look like a ladder.
- Pressing too hard with the pencil. Sketch lightly first. Dark lines are hard to erase when you want to fix a leaf.
FAQs
What is the easiest way to draw a palm tree?
The easiest way is to start with one leaf and a bunch of coconuts, then add more leaves around the coconuts like the hands of a clock. Draw the curved trunk last. Starting with the leaves keeps the crown balanced, which is the hardest part for beginners.
How do you draw palm tree leaves?
Draw a long, curved leaf shape with a zigzag edge on one side and a pointed tip. Then add a curved center line from the base to the tip. Make most leaves droop downward, because real palm fronds bend under their weight.
How many leaves should a palm tree drawing have?
Seven to nine leaves look full without being messy. In this tutorial we use eight leaves: some pointing up and out, and some drooping down on both sides.
How do you draw a palm tree trunk?
Draw two gently curved lines from under the coconuts to the ground, thinner at the top and wider at the bottom. Then add short curved lines across the trunk to show the rings.
What is the difference between a palm tree and a coconut tree drawing?
A coconut tree is one type of palm tree. When you add coconuts under the leaves, as in this tutorial, you’re drawing a coconut palm. Without coconuts, it’s a general palm tree drawing.
Is this palm tree drawing good for kids?
Yes. Each step adds only one new part, shown in red, so children aged 5 and up can follow along. Younger kids can skip the leaf veins and trunk rings.
How long does it take to draw a palm tree?
About 15–20 minutes for the drawing, plus 10–15 minutes if you color it.
How do you make a palm tree drawing look realistic?
Use thin, separate leaflets instead of one solid leaf shape, shade the underside of the leaves, and add uneven rings and shadows to the trunk. See our realistic palm tree drawing guide.
