How to Draw an Eagle — All Steps at a Glance
Save or print this chart and keep it next to your paper while you draw. Below, each step is explained in detail.
Step 1: Draw the Head and Neck Outline
Start near the top-left of your paper. Draw one big curve, like an upside-down “U” that is longer on the right side — this is the top of the head and the back of the neck. Then draw a short, wavy line on the lower left for the front of the neck. Leave a gap between them on the left; the beak will go there.
Tip: Leave plenty of space below and to the right — the body and tail are big.
Step 2: Add the Feathery Neck Ruff
Bald eagles have a white head that ends in a ragged, feathery edge. Connect the two neck lines with a zigzag line made of small rounded points, like a row of upside-down flames. Make the points a little uneven so the feathers look natural.
Step 3: Draw the Hooked Beak
In the gap on the left, draw the beak. Start with a bump where the beak joins the head, then curve the top line out and down into a sharp hook. Draw the bottom of the beak as a smaller curve underneath, and add a short line for the mouth.
Tip: An eagle’s beak is large — about as big as its eye area. A small beak makes the eagle look like a chick.
Step 4: Add the Eye
Draw a circle just above and behind the beak. Inside it, draw a smaller dark circle for the pupil and leave a tiny white dot as a shine. You can add a short line above the eye for the brow — it gives the eagle its serious look.
Step 5: Draw the Folded Wing
From the back of the neck, draw a long, curved shape going down and to the right — like a big leaf. Inside it, draw two or three curved rows of feathers, each row ending in rounded tips. The wing tips should point down toward the bottom right.
Step 6: Draw the Chest and Belly
Starting under the neck feathers on the left, draw a big rounded curve down and around until it meets the bottom of the wing. This makes the eagle’s strong, round chest and belly.
Step 7: Add the Tail Feathers
Below the wing tips, draw three long, narrow feathers pointing down and to the right. Round off each tip. On a bald eagle these will be white when you color them.
Step 8: Sketch the Leg Feathers
At the bottom of the belly, draw a few small curved marks. These show where the fluffy, feathered tops of the legs begin — eagles look like they’re wearing feathery pants!
Step 9: Draw the Front Foot and Talons
Under the left leg feathers, draw a short leg with a few horizontal stripes (the scaly skin). Then draw the foot: three toes in front, each ending in a sharp, curved talon like a hook.
Tip: Make the talons bigger than you think — they are one of the most eagle-like details.
Step 10: Draw the Back Foot
Draw the second leg and foot a little to the right of the first one, the same way. It can overlap slightly, since it’s farther back.
Step 11: Add the Tree Branch
Draw a branch running diagonally under the feet, from the lower left to the lower right. Add a small forked twig on the left end and a few short lines along the branch for bark texture. Erase any parts of the branch that go “through” the toes, so the talons look like they’re gripping it.
Step 12: Add Feather Details
Now make your eagle look feathery. Draw small “V” and “U” shapes on the chest and a few more on the top of the wing. Keep them loose and uneven — you don’t need to fill the whole body.
Step 13: Finish and Clean Up
Trace over your best pencil lines with a black marker. Let the ink dry for a minute, then gently erase all the pencil marks. Your eagle drawing is done — great job!
How to Color Your Bald Eagle
Adult bald eagles have a simple, bold color pattern:
- Head and tail: white — leave them white or add a light gray shadow on one side.
- Body and wings: dark chocolate brown.
- Beak, legs and feet: bright yellow.
- Eye: yellow ring with a black pupil.
- Talons: black or dark gray.
- Branch: light brown with darker brown bark lines.
Shading tip: Press harder with the brown crayon under the wing and along the bottom of the belly. This simple trick makes the eagle look 3D.
Common Mistakes (and Easy Fixes)
- The beak is too small or straight. Make it big and give it a strong downward hook.
- The talons look like fingers. Curve each one into a sharp point, like a fish hook.
- The wing looks stuck on. Start the wing right at the back of the neck so it blends into the body.
- Everything is squeezed into a corner. Start the head near the top-left and leave room for the tail.
- Dark pencil lines won’t erase. Sketch lightly first and only press hard with the marker at the end.
Fun Eagle Facts for Kids
- The bald eagle has been the national emblem of the United States since 1782.
- Its wings stretch about 80 inches (204 cm) from tip to tip — wider than most adults are tall.
- Young bald eagles are mostly brown. They get their famous white head and tail at about 5 years old.
- The biggest bald eagle nest ever recorded was 2.9 meters wide and 6.1 meters tall.

FAQ
Is drawing an eagle hard for beginners?
Not with this method. Breaking the eagle into 13 small steps — head, beak, eye, wing, body, tail, feet and branch — means you only draw one simple shape at a time.
How long does it take to draw an eagle?
About 15–20 minutes for the drawing and another 10 minutes to color it. Younger kids may want to split it into two sessions.
What is the easiest way to draw an eagle’s beak?
Draw a bump where the beak meets the head, then curve the top line out and down into a sharp hook. Add a smaller curve underneath for the lower beak.
How do you draw eagle feathers?
Use small, uneven “V” or “U” shapes. Draw a zigzag edge under the head, rows of rounded feathers on the wing, and a few loose V-shapes on the chest.
What colors do I need for a bald eagle?
White (or light gray) for the head and tail, dark brown for the body and wings, and yellow for the beak and feet.
