How to Draw a Sea Lion Step by Step
Follow each step in order. The red lines in every picture show what to add in that step.
Step 1: Draw the Eye
Start near the upper left of your paper. Draw a small oval for the eye and fill it in, leaving a tiny white dot as a highlight. Add a short curved line above it for the eyelid. Starting with the eye helps you place the whole head in the right spot.
Step 2: Draw the Head and Snout
From above the eye, draw a large rounded curve for the top and back of the head. On the left, bring the line down into a short, blunt snout, then draw the mouth line going back toward the eye. Keep the snout rounded, not pointy like a dog’s.
Step 3: Add the Nose, Ear and Chest
Draw a small heart-shaped nose at the tip of the snout and a little chin under the mouth. Behind the eye, add a tiny curled ear flap. Then draw one long, smooth curve from the chin down to the bottom of the page for the neck and chest.
Step 4: Draw the Back and Front Leg
From the back of the head, draw the neck line down to a small shoulder bump. Continue with a long line that slopes down to the right for the back. Then draw the front of the near flipper: a line that curves down from the chest and rounds off at the bottom.
Step 5: Draw the Belly and Front Flipper
Draw a gently curved belly line toward the back of the body. Finish the front flipper as a long, flat shape resting on the ground, with three or four small wavy bumps at the tip for the toes.
Step 6: Add the Second Front Flipper
On the far side, under the chest, draw the other front flipper peeking out to the left. Make it long and flat with wavy toes at the end, just like the first one.
Step 7: Draw the Rear Flippers
At the end of the body, draw the back flippers as a wide fan shape with a wavy edge. Add the small tip of the tail above them. Fun fact: sea lions can turn these flippers forward to walk on land.
Step 8: Add Whiskers and Neck Folds
Draw three or four thin, slightly curved whiskers on each side of the snout. Then add two curved lines across the neck and chest to show the folds of skin when the sea lion lifts its head.
Step 9: Add Body Details
Draw a few short curved lines on the shoulder and hip to show muscles. Add thin lines inside the rear flipper for the toes. Keep these lines light and few so the drawing stays clean.
Step 10: Draw the Rock
Under the sea lion, draw a flat, jagged rock. Add a few uneven crack lines on its front so it looks like stone.
Step 11: Draw the Waves
Behind the rock, draw rows of short wavy lines for the ocean. Make the waves smaller as they go further back to create a feeling of distance.
Step 12: Add the Horizon and Cliffs
Draw a straight horizon line across the page behind the waves. On the right, add a few small rocky cliffs sticking out of the water.
Step 13: Draw the Sun and Clouds
In the sky, draw a sun with short rays and two fluffy clouds. This completes the beach scene around your sea lion.
Step 14: Trace the Final Outline
Go over your best lines with a black pen or fine-liner. When the ink is dry, erase all the pencil marks. Your sea lion outline is ready to color!
How to Color a Sea Lion
Real sea lions come in different shades. Adult male California sea lions are mostly dark brown to black, while females and young sea lions are blonde to tan. Pups are dark brown when they are born. So you can pick any of these looks for your drawing.
Here’s a simple color palette that works well:
| Part | Color | Hex code |
|---|---|---|
| Body | Golden brown | #A0703F |
| Back and flippers (shading) | Dark brown | #5B3A29 |
| Belly and snout (highlight) | Light tan | #D9B48F |
| Rock | Grey | #8A8D91 |
| Ocean | Blue | #4FA3D1 |
Coloring tips:
- Color the whole body light first, then add darker brown along the back and under the belly.
- Leave a small white spot in the eye so it looks shiny.
- Make the water darker near the horizon and lighter near the rock.
- Want a wet look? Add a few white streaks on the sea lion’s back with a white gel pen.
Common Mistakes (and How to Fix Them)
- The neck is too short. A sea lion holds its head high. If your drawing looks squashed, make the chest curve in Step 3 longer.
- Forgetting the ear flap. Without the ear, your sea lion turns into a seal. Always add the small curl behind the eye.
- Flippers too small. Sea lion flippers are long and broad. Make the front flipper at least as long as the head.
- Whiskers too thick. Use a light hand and quick strokes so the whiskers look thin and natural.
- Pressing too hard with the pencil. Dark pencil lines are hard to erase. Sketch lightly and only press harder when you trace the final outline.

Fun Sea Lion Facts for Kids
- Sea lions are called “eared seals” because, unlike true seals, they have visible ear flaps.
- Male sea lions bark like dogs, and they are very playful and intelligent animals.
- A male California sea lion can grow up to 7.5 feet long and weigh about 700 pounds. Females are smaller, around 6 feet and 240 pounds.
- A mother sea lion can find her own pup among hundreds of others by its voice, then checks its scent to be sure.
- Sea lions can live 20 to 30 years.
- When resting in the water, groups of sea lions float together with their flippers in the air. This is called “rafting.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it hard to draw a sea lion?
No. A sea lion is one of the easier animals to draw because its body is made of smooth, simple curves. If you follow this guide one step at a time, most beginners can finish it in 20–30 minutes.
What is the difference between drawing a seal and a sea lion?
A sea lion has small ear flaps, a longer neck and long front flippers that hold its body upright. A seal has no ear flaps and usually lies flat on its belly. Adding the ear flap and the upright pose makes your drawing look like a sea lion.
What color is a sea lion?
Most sea lions are brown. Adult males are dark brown to almost black, while females and young sea lions are blonde to tan. Golden brown with darker shading is a great choice for a drawing.
How long does it take to draw a sea lion?
About 20–30 minutes for the outline and another 10–15 minutes to color it. Younger kids may want to split it into two sessions.
How do you draw a sea lion’s face and whiskers?
Start with the eye, then draw a rounded head and a short, blunt snout. Add a heart-shaped nose, a small chin and a curled ear behind the eye. For whiskers, draw three or four thin, curved lines on each side of the snout with quick, light strokes.
How do you draw a cute cartoon sea lion?
Make the head larger compared to the body, use big round eyes with shiny highlights and add a small smile. Keep the flippers short and rounded. Bright colors and a beach ball prop make it even cuter.
Can young kids follow this tutorial?
Yes. Children aged 6 and up can follow it on their own, and younger kids can do it with a little help from an adult. Printing the step-by-step PDF makes it even easier.
