How to Draw a Fox Step by Step
Follow these steps in order. Take your time, and remember that each new part is shown in red.
Step 1 — Start the muzzle
Near the middle of your paper, draw a small “U” shape with two little tips at the top. This is the front of the fox’s muzzle, where the nose and mouth will go.
Step 2 — Add the nose
Draw a little rounded nose sitting on top of the U shape. Now your fox is starting to get a face.
Step 3 — Draw the first eye and mouth
Add one eye above the nose, then draw a soft smiling mouth line under the nose. Keep the eye big and round to make your fox look friendly.
Step 4 — Draw the second eye
Add the other eye so both eyes match. Two big eyes give your cute fox lots of personality.
Step 5 — Outline the face and cheeks
Draw the outside shape of the face around the eyes. Add some little pointy fur bumps on the cheeks to make it look furry.
Step 6 — Add the first ear
Draw one big pointed ear on top of the head. Foxes have large ears, so make it nice and tall. Add a smaller shape inside for the inner ear.
Step 7 — Add the second ear
Draw the matching ear on the other side. Now your fox head is complete and ready for a body.
Step 8 — Start the neck and chest
Draw two lines coming down from the head to begin the neck and the fluffy chest.
Step 9 — Draw the first front leg
Add one front leg coming down from the chest. Keep it slim and end it with a small paw.
Step 10 — Add the second front leg and back
Draw the other front leg, then curve a line around the back and belly to shape the body.
Step 11 — Finish the body outline
Close up the body shape and add the back leg so your fox looks like it’s sitting down.
Step 12 — Add the back paw
Draw the back paw at the bottom of the sitting leg. Now your fox has all four legs.
Step 13 — Start the tail
Begin the big bushy tail curving out from the back of the fox. A fox tail is about one-third of the whole body, so make it large.
Step 14 — Shape the bottom of the tail
Curve the bottom line of the tail back toward the body so it looks full and fluffy.
Step 15 — Finish the tail
Close up the tail and round off the tip. Your whole fox is now drawn in outline.
Step 16 — Add fur details
Go around your fox and add little fur marks on the chest, tail, and body. These short lines make the coat look soft and real.
Step 17 — Add whiskers and inner-ear fur
Add a few whiskers on the cheeks and some fluffy lines inside the ears. These small touches finish the fox’s face.
Step 18 — Color your fox
Trace your final lines with a marker, erase the pencil, and color it in. A classic fox is orange on the body, white on the chest, belly, and tail tip, with black paws and nose. All done — you’ve learned how to draw a fox!
