How to Draw a Snail Step by Step
Step 1: Draw the Bottom of the Shell
Draw a long curved shape near the bottom of your page. It looks a bit like a thin banana, low on the left and rising up on the right. This is the edge of the shell, where the snail’s soft body tucks underneath.
Step 2: Draw the Spiral Shell
Now draw a big round shell sitting on top of that curve. Start on the outside and keep curling your line inward, making each loop a little smaller. Stop after about three turns, with a tiny hook in the middle. Add a short line at the bottom left to join the shell to the curve.
Tip: If spirals feel tricky, draw a light pencil circle first and spiral inside it.
Step 3: Draw the Body and Foot
From the right end of the shell, draw a tall rounded neck going up. Bring the line back down the right side and along the bottom in a long, flat line. Finish on the left with a pointed tail. The foot should stick out past the shell on both sides.
Step 4: Draw the Eyes
Draw two circles side by side, a little above the snail’s head. Make them nice and big. Big eyes are what make a cartoon snail look cute.
Step 5: Draw the Eye Stalks
Connect each eye to the top of the head with two thin lines. These are the snail’s eye stalks. Real snails really do carry their eyes on the tips of their tentacles!
Step 6: Add Pupils and Face Details
Inside each eye, draw a smaller circle for the pupil, with a tiny circle inside it for shine. Then add three short curved lines on the snail’s neck. They give it soft, wrinkly skin and a friendly look.
Step 7: Outline Your Snail
Trace over your pencil lines with a black marker. Color the pupils in black, but leave the small shine dots white. Wait a minute for the ink to dry, then gently erase any pencil lines you can still see.
Step 8: Draw the Background
Give your snail a garden to live in. Draw a sun with short rays in one corner and two fluffy clouds in the sky. Add a few bushes behind the snail, small grass tufts and some little pebbles on the ground.
Step 9: Your Snail Drawing Is Finished!
Great job! Your snail drawing is complete. You can color it in now, or print it and use it as a coloring page.
How to Color Your Snail
You can use any colors you like, but here’s a palette that looks great:
| Part | Color | Hex code |
|---|---|---|
| Shell | Caramel brown | #C68642 |
| Spiral line or stripes | Dark brown | #8B5A2B |
| Body | Soft green (or light tan) | #9ED48A (#F3D19C) |
| Sun | Warm yellow | #FFD54F |
| Sky | Light blue | #BDE3F7 |
| Grass and bushes | Leaf green | #6BBF59 |
Color the shell a little darker near the spiral line and lighter on the outside. It makes the shell look round instead of flat.
Common Mistakes (and Easy Fixes)
- The spiral looks lopsided. Draw a light circle first, then spiral inside it. Go slowly on the last small loops.
- The shell looks like it’s floating. Make sure the bottom of the shell sits right on the curve from Step 1.
- The body looks too short. Stretch the foot so it sticks out past the shell at the front and the back.
- The marker smudged. Let the ink dry fully before you use the eraser.
Snail Drawing Ideas to Try Next
- Patterned shell: Swap the spiral for stripes, dots or zigzags.
- Kawaii snail: Give it rosy cheeks, a tiny smile and sparkly eyes.
- Snail on a leaf: Draw a big leaf under the foot instead of grass.
- Snail family: Draw a big snail with two baby snails following behind.
- Rainy day snail: Add raindrops and a puddle. Snails love damp weather!
Fun Snail Facts for Kids
- Snails are mollusks, not insects. They are related to slugs, clams and octopuses.
- Their eyes are on their tentacles. The longer top pair holds the eyes; the shorter pair is for smelling and feeling.
- They have thousands of tiny teeth on a tongue-like part called the radula, which they use to scrape their food.
- Snails move on one big muscular foot that slides along on a layer of slime.
- Their shell grows with them. Snails are born with a shell, and it keeps growing their whole life.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you draw a snail shell spiral?
Start at the outer edge of the shell and curl your line inward, making each loop a little smaller than the last. About three turns is enough for a cartoon snail. If your spiral keeps going off-center, lightly draw a circle first and spiral inside it, then erase the circle later.
What is the easiest way to draw a snail for kids?
Break the snail into simple shapes: a curved line, a spiral, a body shaped like a long “L”, and two circles for eyes. Follow one step at a time. Our 9-step guide shows each new line in red, so kids always know what to add next.
What colors should I use for a snail?
Most garden snails have brown, tan or yellowish shells with darker stripes, and a grey or light brown body. For a cartoon snail you can use any colors you like. A brown shell with a soft green body and a blue sky looks bright and cheerful.
How long does it take to draw a snail?
Most kids finish the outline in about 10 to 15 minutes. Coloring takes another 10 to 20 minutes, depending on how much detail you add to the shell and background.
How do you make a snail drawing look cute?
Give it big round eyes with white shine dots, a small smile and a soft, rounded body. Keep the lines smooth and curvy. Adding rosy cheeks or a little flower on the shell makes it even cuter.
What is the difference between drawing a snail and a slug?
A slug is drawn almost the same way as a snail, just without the shell. Skip Steps 1 and 2, draw a longer body with a rounded back, and add the eye stalks and face the same way.
