How to Draw a Sunset
Step by Step

Colorful beach sunset drawing with palm trees, surfboard, umbrella and child by the sea – sunset drawing for kids
To draw a sunset, start with a half circle for the sun, then add a horizon line, hills and a few birds. Draw the sea with the sun's reflection, add beach details like palm trees and an umbrella, and finish by coloring the sky from yellow near the sun to orange, pink and purple at the top. This tutorial turns that simple idea into a complete beach sunset scene. You will draw a setting sun, rolling hills, flying birds, a sparkling sea, a surfboard, a beach umbrella, two palm trees and a person welcoming the evening with open arms. Each new step is shown in red, so you always know exactly what to add next. It works for kids, beginners and anyone who wants a relaxing drawing project. Grab a pencil and let's begin.

🖊️ What You Need

If you like drawing on a screen, a digital drawing tablet and stylus work great too. But paper is all you really need for an easy drawing.

How to Draw a Sunset Step by Step

Step 1: Draw the Setting Sun

Draw a large half circle in the middle of your paper, a little below the center. This is the sun sinking below the horizon. Leave plenty of space above it for the sky and below it for the sea and beach.

Tip: Draw lightly at first. If your curve is not smooth, sketch a few small dots along the arc and connect themStep 1 of how to draw a sunset: a half circle for the setting sun

Step 2: Add the Horizon Line and Hills

Draw a straight horizontal line along the bottom of the sun. This is the horizon, the place where the sky meets the sea. Then add gentle, wavy hills on the left side and a sloping mountain on the right side, running behind the sun.

Tip: Make the right mountain taller than the left hills. Uneven shapes look more natural than matching ones.

Step 3: Draw Birds in the Sky

Add four small birds around the sun. Each bird is just a soft “M” shape: two curved lines that meet in a small point in the middle. Place them at different heights so they look like they are flying freely.

Tip: Make the birds slightly different sizes. Smaller birds look farther away.

Step 4: Draw the Sea

Extend the horizon line all the way across the page. Then draw a second horizontal line a bit lower down. The space between these two lines is your sea.

Step 5: Draw the Shoreline

Inside the sea area, near the bottom, draw a long, gently wavy line. This is where the water washes onto the sand. A soft wave shape makes the beach feel calm and peaceful.

Tip: Keep the waves low and smooth. Big, sharp waves would change the relaxed mood of a sunset.

Step 6: Draw the Sun’s Reflection on the Water

Right under the sun, draw several thin, flat ovals stacked on the water. Make the top ones wider and the lower ones shorter. These shapes show sunlight sparkling on the sea.

Tip: The reflection should sit directly below the sun. This one detail makes your drawing look much more realistic.

Step 7: Add a Surfboard in the Sand

On the left side of the beach, draw a tall, narrow oval with a pointed top. This is a surfboard standing upright in the sand. Add a second curved line inside the edge for thickness, then draw a slanted shadow at its base.

Step 8: Draw a Beach Umbrella

On the right side, draw a dome shape for the top of the umbrella. Give the bottom edge a scalloped look with small curves, and add a few lines from the top point down to each curve. Draw a long pole and a small oval shadow on the sand.

Tip: The scalloped edge is what makes it look like a real beach umbrella, so take your time here.

Step 9: Shape the Sandy Beach

Near the bottom of the page, draw a long, gentle curve from one side to the other. This marks the front of the beach and gives your scene a soft, rounded foreground.

Step 10: Draw the First Palm Tree

On the far right, draw a tall, slightly curved trunk that reaches near the top of the page. At the top, draw long leaves that spread out in different directions. Give each leaf jagged edges with many short, quick strokes.

Tip: Let some leaves go off the edge of the paper. This makes the tree feel large and close to the viewer.

Step 11: Add the Second Palm Tree

Draw a second palm tree on the left side in the same way. Together, the two trees frame the sunset like curtains on a stage and pull the viewer’s eye toward the center.

Step 12: Draw Beach Grass

At the base of each palm tree, draw a few small grass tufts. Use quick, upward strokes that come to sharp points. Small details like this help the trees look planted in the sand.

Step 13: Add a Person Watching the Sunset

In the middle of the beach, draw a simple person standing with both arms raised high. Start with a round head, then add the body, shorts and legs. The raised arms give your drawing a happy, free feeling.

Tip: You do not need facial details. At sunset, people usually look like dark silhouettes against the bright sky.

Step 14: Complete the Outline

Look over your drawing and fix any lines that need it. Erase extra sketch marks. If you like, trace the final lines with a black marker or fineliner. Your sunset outline is now complete and ready for color.

Sunset Color Palette

Use these colors from the sun outward to get a smooth, glowing sky:

Part of the Drawing Color Hex Code
Sun center Pale yellow #FFE066
Around the sun Light orange #FFB347
Middle sky Orange #FF7F3F
Upper sky Pink #F25C8A
Top of the sky Purple #8E5BA8
Distant hills Deep violet #3B2F6B
Silhouettes Dark plum #2B1B3D

Why are sunsets orange and pink? When the sun is low, its light travels through much more of the atmosphere before reaching your eyes. Most of the blue light gets scattered away along the way, so the warm reds, oranges and pinks are what remain. That is why the colors near the horizon are always the warmest.

Easy Sunset Drawing for Kids

For younger kids, here is a shorter version with just five steps:

  1. Draw a half circle for the sun.
  2. Draw a straight line under it for the horizon.
  3. Add a few “M” shaped birds in the sky.
  4. Draw one palm tree on the side with a curved trunk and a few leaves.
  5. Color the sky yellow, orange and pink, and the sea blue with orange stripes.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • A tilted horizon. If the horizon line slopes, the sea looks like it is spilling off the page. Use a ruler or line it up with the bottom edge of your paper.
  • Muddy sky colors. Mixing purple directly into yellow creates a brownish color. Always keep orange and pink between them.
  • Forgetting the reflection. The sun’s glow on the water connects the sky and sea. Without it, the scene can look flat.
  • Coloring silhouettes too light. Trees and people in front of a sunset look dark. Light colors on these shapes make the sky look less bright.
  • Pressing too hard while sketching. Heavy pencil lines are hard to erase. Sketch lightly and darken the lines only at the end.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the easiest way to draw a sunset?

Draw a half circle on a straight horizon line, add a few birds, and color the sky from yellow near the sun to orange, pink and purple at the top. That is a complete sunset in just a few minutes.

What colors do I need to draw a sunset?

You need yellow, orange, pink and purple for the sky, plus a dark color like deep purple, dark brown or black for silhouettes. Blue or violet works well for distant hills and the sea.

How do I make my sunset drawing look realistic?

Blend the sky colors smoothly, place the sun’s reflection directly under it on the water, and keep everything in the foreground dark. Strong contrast between a bright sky and dark shapes is what makes a sunset look real.

What is the difference between drawing a sunrise and a sunset?

The drawing method is the same. Sunrises usually use softer, cooler colors like pale yellow, peach and light blue, while sunsets use deeper oranges, reds and purples.

Can I draw a sunset with just a pencil?

Yes. Use light shading near the sun and gradually darker shading toward the top of the sky. Shade the hills, trees and person very dark so the sun area looks bright by comparison.

How long does it take to draw this sunset?

The outline takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Coloring takes another 15 to 25 minutes, depending on the supplies you use.
