How to Draw a Dinosaur Step by Step
Follow these dinosaur drawing step by step instructions. Go slowly, and remember your dinosaur does not need to be perfect. Real T-Rex dinosaurs were big and bumpy too, and that is part of what made them so cool. Every line you draw helps your hand get steadier and more confident.
Step 1: Draw the Head Shape
Start by drawing a rounded shape in the middle of your paper, with a small bump on top for the snout. This will become the head of your T-Rex, so leave room below for the body.
Step 2: Add the Open Mouth
Inside the head, draw a wide curved line for the open mouth. A T-Rex always looks like it is roaring, so make this smile nice and big.
Step 3: Add the Teeth
Along the top and bottom of the mouth, draw a row of small pointed teeth. T-Rex dinosaurs had lots of sharp teeth, so do not be afraid to add plenty of them.
Step 4: Add the Eyes
Above the mouth, draw two round eyes. Keep them close together near the top of the head so your T-Rex looks alert and ready to roar.
Step 5: Draw the Neck
Below the head, draw two curved lines coming down to form the neck. The T-Rex neck is short and thick, so keep the lines fairly close together.
Step 6: Draw the Body and Tail
Continue the lines down into a big rounded body shape, then curve one side out into a long pointed tail. The tail helps balance the T-Rex as it walks.
Step 7: Add the Belly Line
Inside the body, draw a curved line down the front to show the belly. This line will later separate the lighter belly color from the rest of the body.
Step 8: Add the Front Arms
Near the top of the body, draw two tiny little arms with small claws. T-Rex dinosaurs are famous for having very short front arms compared to the rest of their body.
Step 9: Draw the Back Legs
At the bottom of the body, draw a thick, sturdy leg with a clawed foot. This leg needs to be strong enough to hold up the whole dinosaur.
Step 10: Draw the Second Leg
Add a second matching leg next to the first one. Try to make both legs about the same size so your T-Rex can stand up straight.
Step 11: Clean Up the Legs
Go around and smooth out the legs and feet so they look strong and even. Erase any extra pencil marks around the bottom of your dinosaur.
Step 12: Add Spikes Along the Back
Along the back of the neck and down the tail, draw a row of small bumpy spikes. These give your T-Rex a tough, scaly look.
Step 13: Trace Your Final Lines
Go over your favorite lines with a black marker, then gently erase any leftover pencil marks. You now have a clean dinosaur outline. This makes a great dinosaur coloring page all on its own!
Step 14: Color Your Dinosaur
Now for the best part: coloring! T-Rex dinosaurs are often shown in green or brown, with a lighter cream or white belly and pink inside the mouth. Your dinosaur is finished and ready to roar. It is your art, so use any colors you love!
