How to Draw a Truck
Step by Step

Side view of a cartoon box delivery truck with cab and big wheels – truck drawing for kids
Now you know how to draw a truck, from one simple rectangle all the way to big wheels and shiny windows. Be proud of your work, even if a few lines came out wobbly. Every artist starts that way. Draw your truck a few more times and try a new color each time. Then turn it into a food truck or a fire truck. Happy drawing!

🖊️ What You Need

If you like drawing on a screen, a digital drawing tablet and stylus work great too. But paper is all you really need for an easy drawing.

How to Draw a Truck Step by Step

Take your time with each step. The truck is drawn from the side, starting with the cargo box at the back and moving forward to the cab.

Step 1: Draw the Cargo Box Panel

Draw a long rectangle, about twice as wide as it is tall. Place it a little to the right on your paper, because the cab will go on the left later. Then draw a second rectangle just inside the first one, very close to its edges. This thin double line is the side panel of the cargo box.

Step 1: a long rectangle with a thin double line for the truck's cargo box panel

Step 2: Draw the Outer Frame of the Box

Draw a slightly bigger rectangle around your panel. Leave a small, even gap on all sides. On the left side, add a thin vertical strip. This is the front edge of the cargo box.

Step 2: outer frame drawn around the cargo box with a narrow strip on the front

Step 3: Add the Front Wall and Marker Lights

On the left edge of the box, draw a tall, narrow post that rises a little above the roof of the box. Next to it, draw two long, thin panels, one above the other. Add a small round light at the top of each panel. These parts sit right behind the cab.

Step 3: front post and two side panels with round marker lights on the cargo box

Step 4: Draw the Rear Fender and Tail Light

Under the back half of the box, draw the rear fender. It looks like a long, flat shape with slanted ends on both sides, drawn with a double line. At the very back of the truck, add a small round tail light.

Step 4: slanted rear wheel fender under the box and a round tail light

Step 5: Add the Chassis Frame

Draw a long, thin rectangle under the whole box, from the front post to the back. This is the frame of the truck that holds everything together. Below the frame near the back, add a small rectangle. Part of it will hide behind the wheels later.

Step 4: slanted rear wheel fender under the box and a round tail light

Step 6: Draw the Fuel Tank

Under the front part of the frame, draw a rounded tank shape that hangs down. Add two small circles on top of it for the fuel caps. Then draw a curved bracket line next to the tank.

Step 6: fuel tank with two round caps hanging under the truck frame

Step 7: Add the Side Steps

Below the fuel tank, draw two long, flat bars, one under the other. Hold them up with two short vertical posts. Add a few slanted lines across each bar to show the grip pattern.

Step 7: two striped side steps on posts below the fuel tank

Step 8: Draw the Front Bumper and Front Fender

Now move to the front of the truck. At the bottom left, draw a long rounded rectangle for the front bumper. Above and to the right of it, draw an arch with slanted sides for the front wheel. Use the same double-line style as the rear fender.

Step 8: front bumper and front wheel arch added to the truck

Step 9: Add the Headlight

Just above the bumper, on the front of the truck, draw a small, tall, rounded shape. This is the headlight.

Step 9: small rounded headlight drawn above the front bumper

Step 10: Draw the Cab

From the top of the front fender, draw a line that slants up and to the right. Curve it over to make a rounded roof. Then bring a straight line down at the back of the cab until it meets the frame. Keep the cab a little shorter than the cargo box.

Step 10: truck cab outline with a slanted front and rounded roof

Step 11: Add the Windows

Inside the top of the cab, draw two windows with rounded corners. The front window slants to follow the shape of the cab. The side window is taller and straighter. Add a soft curved line across both windows to show a shine on the glass.

Step 11: front and side windows added to the truck cab

Step 12: Draw the Door and Handle

Draw a straight line from between the two windows down to the bottom of the cab. Add a short horizontal line under the side window. Finish with a small oval for the door handle.

Step 12: cab door line and small oval door handle

Step 13: Add the Side Mirror

At the front corner of the cab, draw a tall, rounded mirror on a small bent arm. Truck mirrors are big, so the driver can see the long box behind them.

Step 13: tall side mirror on a bent arm at the front of the cab

Step 14: Draw the Front Wheel

Under the front fender, draw a big circle for the tire. Inside it, draw a smaller circle for the rim, and a tiny circle in the center for the hub. Tracing a bottle cap or coin makes this easy.

Step 14: front wheel drawn with circles for the tire, rim and hub

Step 15: Draw the Back Wheel

Draw the same wheel under the back end of the rear fender. Make it the same size as the front wheel, and keep the bottoms of both tires on the same level.

Step 15: back wheel added under the rear fender of the truck

Step 16: Add the Middle Wheel

Draw one more wheel just in front of the back wheel, under the rear fender. Big cargo trucks often have two wheels close together at the back to carry heavy loads.

Step 16: middle rear wheel drawn next to the back wheel

Step 17: Add Rim Details

Inside each wheel, draw a gentle curved line across the hub. Then draw a half circle under it. This shows the curved shape of the metal rim.

Step 17: curved rim details drawn inside all three truck wheels

Common Truck Drawing Mistakes (and Easy Fixes)

  • The box is too small: the cargo box should be about twice as long as the cab. Draw the box first, like we did in Step 1, and the size takes care of itself.
  • Wheels at different heights: draw a light ground line before Step 14, and let every tire touch it.
  • Wheels too small: each tire should reach from the fender almost to the ground. Small wheels make the truck look like a toy.
  • Wobbly long lines: use a ruler for the box and frame. Freehand is fine for the cab and mirror.
  • Pressing too hard: sketch lightly first. Dark lines are hard to erase if you need to fix something.

Turn It Into a Different Truck

Once you can draw this truck, small changes turn it into something new:

  • Delivery truck: add a logo and big letters on the side of the box.
  • Food truck: draw a serving window on the box with a striped awning above it.
  • Ice cream truck: paint the box pink and add a giant cone on the roof.
  • Fire truck: color it red and put a long ladder on top of the box.
  • Moving truck: add a roll-up door outline at the back of the box.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you draw a truck step by step?

Start with a long rectangle for the cargo box. Add the frame, fenders and fuel tank underneath. Then draw the cab with its windows, door and mirror on the left. Finish with three round wheels, outline your drawing in marker, and color it.

What is the easiest way to draw a truck for kids?

Build the truck from simple shapes. A rectangle makes the box, a rounded shape makes the cab, and circles make the wheels. Young kids can use the easy version above and skip the small details.

How long does it take to draw a truck?

The full 19-step truck takes about 25 to 30 minutes. The easy version takes about 15 minutes. Coloring adds another 10 minutes or so.

What kind of truck is this?

This is a box truck, also called a cargo truck or delivery truck. It has a closed box on the back, a separate cab in front, and three wheels on each side.

How do I make truck wheels look round?

Trace something round, like a coin, a bottle cap, or the bottom of a cup. You can also use a compass. Draw the tire first, then the smaller rim and hub inside it.

What colors should I use for my truck?

Any colors you like! A classic look is a white box with a red or blue cab, black tires, gray rims and yellow headlights.

Can I print this truck drawing tutorial?

Yes. The PDF guide and the truck coloring page are free to download and print, with no signup.
