How to Draw a Baseball Step by Step
Follow along one step at a time. Take it slow, sketch lightly at first, and remember you can always erase and try again.
Step 1: Draw the Circle
Every baseball starts with a round shape. In the middle of your paper, draw a circle. This is the body of the ball.
If drawing a perfect circle by hand feels hard, don’t worry very few people can do it freehand. Trace around a cup, a roll of tape, or a jar lid. You can also use a compass or a circle template. Some artists lightly draw a horizontal and vertical reference line first (like a small plus sign) to help center the circle. Erase those helper lines later.
Step 2: Add the First Curved Seam Line
Now we give the ball its shape. On one side of the circle, draw a gentle curved seam line. Think of a wide letter “C” or a soft “S” curve that bends toward the edge of the ball.
This curved line is where the leather panels of a real baseball meet. Keep it light for now — you can darken it later once it looks right.
Step 3: Add the Second Curved Seam Line
Next, draw a matching curved line on the other side of the ball. It should mirror the first one, curving the opposite way.
When you finish this step, your ball should have two curved seam lines, one on each side, leaving a wider space in the middle. This is the classic baseball look, and it is starting to come together already.
Step 4: Draw the Stitches on the First Seam
Here comes the fun part the stitches. Along your first seam line, draw a row of small V-shaped stitches. Each stitch looks like a tiny “V” or a little branch mark leaning along the curve.
Space them out evenly and follow the curve of the seam. Try to keep them about the same size. This is how you draw baseball stitches so they look neat instead of messy.
Step 5: Draw the Stitches on the Second Seam
Now repeat the same thing on the other seam line. Add another row of small V-shaped stitches along the second curve.
Try to match the number and size of the stitches on both sides. A similar stitch count on the left and right makes your baseball drawing look balanced and polished. If a line comes out wobbly, just clean it up with your eraser.
Step 6: Add Shading for a 3D Look
Want to learn how to draw a realistic baseball? This is the step that does it. Right now your ball looks flat. Shading will make it look round, like a real ball you could pick up.
First, pick a light source let’s say the light comes from the top right. That means the shadow falls on the bottom left. Using the side of your pencil lead, add soft, curved contour lines and gentle shading along the bottom-left edge of the ball. Keep the top-right area light and bright that is your highlight, where the light hits.
Smooth it out by lightly rubbing (some people call it blending or smudging) with your finger or a tissue. Leave a small white spot in the bright area so it looks like light is shining on the ball. This little trick is the secret to a realistic pencil baseball sketch.
Step 7: Finish and Color Your Baseball
Almost done! Go over your best lines with a black pen or marker to make the outline pop. Then erase any leftover pencil marks and helper lines.
Now for color. A baseball is white with red stitches, so color the stitches with your red pencil or marker and leave the ball white. Want to make it look like the ball is flying through the air? Add a few short motion lines beside it. And that is how you finish an easy baseball drawing you can be proud of.
Want a Cute or Cartoon Baseball Instead?
Not every baseball has to look real. If you want a cute baseball drawing or a cartoon baseball drawing, you can add a happy face with two dot eyes and a big smile. Give it little arms and legs, or draw it wearing a tiny cap. Kids love this version, and it is a great baseball doodle for notebooks, cards, and posters.
You can also turn your ball into a baseball logo drawing by adding bold outlines and bright colors. There are no wrong answers here — have fun with it.
