What Color Are Baby Chicks? A Quick Coloring Guide

Most people picture a bright yellow chick, and many breeds really do hatch yellow. But baby chicks also come in cream, light brown, black and even chipmunk-style stripes, depending on the breed. Barred Rock chicks, for example, are black with a small white spot on the head.

For little ones, keep it simple: yellow or orange for the body, orange for the beak and feet, and any colors they like for the scene. Older kids can use two shades of yellow, a light one for the body and a darker one under the wing, to make the chick look soft and fluffy.

5 Easy Activities with Your Chick Coloring Sheets

  1. Spring or birthday cards. Color a chick, fold cardstock in half and glue the picture on the front.
  2. Story time. Lay out three scene pages and let your child tell a story about the chick’s day.
  3. Seasons sort. Color the spring, rainy, summer and winter chicks, then ask your child to put them in order through the year.
  4. Classroom display. Each child colors a different chick for a “Spring on the Farm” wall.
  5. Fluffy chick. Glue cotton balls or yellow tissue paper onto the colored chick for a soft, touchable picture.
